In this paper we investigate suspected contact phenomena in dialectal syntax, by studying the syntax of demonstratives in Italiot and Asia Minor Greek. We show that exclusively DP-initial place- ment of demonstratives results from two possible diachronic paths, not necessarily driven by contact, with different dialects representing different stages in the respective paths.
