Can we think about war as an object of semiotic analysis? Of course, since it embodies all the problems, the variables and categories that a discipline such as semiotics, in particular sociosemiotics and semiotics of culture, recognizes as fundamental: time and space relationships, actors involved and their ability to plan the action, the relationship between passion, perception and action. The "anomaly" in this case, is that we are studying semiotic systems and practices not only as production, but also as "destruction", in their coding and representational activity. In particular, the link between war and narrative opens up this possibility of investigation. It is in this context that the author thinks about the relationship between strategies and representations, that is, the ways in which the war is "painted" – described, narrated, photographed, filmed. Behind the apparent diversity, we can find the idea of emerging structural models, seen in a comparative way, of fight, conflict and struggle. In an attempt to provide some definitions of war, between anthropology and semiotics, the author insists on the one hand on the glance of semiotics on conflict and, on the other, about the idea – also underlined by Foucault – to observe "forms of war" for showing larger historical, cultural power relationships. More generally, the goal is to consider war inside a given cultural universe, thinking the anthropology of conflict as a part of a larger project of cultural semiotics.
Possiamo rendere la guerra oggetto di un’analisi semiotica? Naturalmente, poiché essa racchiude in sé tutti i problemi, le variabili e le categorie che una disciplina come la semiotica, in particolare una sociosemiotica e una semiotica della cultura, riconosce come fondamentali: il tempo e lo spazio; gli attori in gioco e la loro capacità di pianificare l’azione; il rapporto tra passione, percezione e azione. L’“anomalia”, in questo caso, è che si studiano semioticamente i sistemi e le pratiche non solo di produzione, ma anche “di distruzione”, e la loro codificazione e rappresentazione. In particolare, è il nesso fra guerra e racconto ad aprirci questa possibilità di indagine. È in tale ottica che l’autore inquadra il rapporto fra strategie e rappresentazioni, cioè i modi in cui la guerra viene “dipinta” – descritta, narrata, fotografata, filmata. Dietro l’apparente eterogeneità, emerge l’ipotesi di una “trama” strutturale, di uno o più modelli del confronto, della lotta. Nel tentativo di fornire alcune definizioni della guerra tra antropologia e semiotica, l’autore insiste da un lato sullo sguardo semiotico verso i fenomeni propri del conflitto, dall’altro sull’idea – sottolineata pure dall’ultimo Foucault – di uno sguardo “bellico” che osservi la storia, per far emergere dalle culture i rapporti di forza e le linee di scontro. Più in generale, il suo obiettivo è considerare la guerra in quanto parte di un dato universo culturale, guardando a un’antropologia dei conflitti collocabile nel progetto di una più vasta semiotica delle culture.
