This article describes a production line model based on constant machine rates, fixed finite buffer size and stochastic failure and repair behavior. The model is initialized with field data and validated on an Italian wine production industry. The production line behavior is simulated using a discrete event model. Using model results according with the proposed heuristic approach, the buffers capacity design is provided, according to system specifications and physical constrains. The analysis of the results shows that the production rate is significantly enhanced by buffers re-design. The methodology presented in this paper is applicable to many types of bottling lines and can be used in many industries to improve design and performances.
