A method is developed for the measurement of combustion enthalpy by DSC in a stream of oxygen. The relationship between the enthalpy measured and the sample mass was investigated and quantitative results were obtained. The instrument has been carefully calibrated and an allowance made for the gaseous products eluted. The results show that the DSC method is less precise than the calorimetric bomb method, although the mean values obtained by the two methods are in good agreement. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
