Abstract

Biological ideas and theories have often been invoked to justify war, particularly by authors generally ranged among the so-called social Darwinists. But there were many anti-Darwinists, especially in Germany, who supported war on moral, not biological, grounds. Before, during and after World War One an intense and confused debate took place on whether war had eugenic or dysgenic effects.
