INTRODUCTIONThis paper shows the results of a survey carried out in Italy, at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. This study envolves the first 250 graduates of the Course of Bachelor of Nursing from the beginning. The educational pathway started in the academic year 2002/03, after a great transformation of the previous course of university diploma. The first step was to conform the organization of the educational rule according to the new University laws. After the initial critical phase and after the degree of two groups of students, we started the survey with the following aims:1) identify potentialities, opportunities and limitations that are traced in the initial working periods of the new nurses with degree;2) understand their point of view in relation to the education they have received in the university course;3) understand their professional satisfaction;4) verify the continuous development after the studies finalisation;5) develop and maintain a database that would enable to monitor the professional advancement versus the studies performed. The study begins with a revision of the international nursing literature about the career opportunities and the professional development of the graduates nurses. The research showed that many university departments have investigated their graduates nurses, like for example the British one. We found out 11 researches: 10 follow-up design and a1 qualitative: all of them have been conducted by teachers and researchers of the Universities of Manchester, Edinburgh, Surrey, Ulster, Chelsea, Cardiff, Hull, Glasgow and Birmingham, in Great Britain and Tel Aviv in Israel. In spite the differences about the subjects taught and in the organization itself, as in the characteristics of the students, it is surprising to note that the career development of the graduates nurses shows similarities. METHODSAccording to the revision of the literature, the procedure we followed was a quantitative-descriptive study. The sample of the investigation was all the students graduates (n=250) at the Course of Bachelor of Nursing from the moment of its setting up. The data were collected by anonymous survey delivered by mail. The same procedure is used when following up investigations on graduates nurses, found by literature revision. Tool: the survey is partly made from existing references adapted to Italian nursing education and environment, made of 30 major topic investigated by open questions and multiple choice questions. A reference team has verified the survey and a pilot survey (to monitor the understanding of the questions) has been performed in a similar environment (Mantova University).FINDINGSThe number of respondents was 225 on a total of 250 graduates: answer rate 90%. The sample is composed by 65% of female gender. The average age of enrolment at the course is 23 years, with a range from the 18 up to 52 years. The total amount of answering people (97%) is working as a nurse. A great number of nurses (88%) is employed in the National Health Service; the 11% works in the private setting. The graduates occupational sector is quite scattered, the area mainly represented is clinic, 30% of the respondent is employed in the critical area. 93% percentage works near Modena, even though the 62% only is also living there. The 97% of the graduates declares to be satisfied of the professional choice; to the question “why do you choose nursing profession and you go on working in nursing?” they answer a lot of positive and several aspects: the most important is the enthusiasm and the satisfaction for the undertaken choice. The 8% of the graduates who took the degree has continued the university studies. The 88% of the answering people declares to be really interested in educational courses post-degree; Most of them (57%) have a stake in clinical competences to be acquired through the frequency of master of I°level, about critical care nursing. “Which is the main knowledge and ability you learned at Course of Bachelor in Nursing? Which things did help you in the first period of your employment? At these questions the 55% of the nurses answered “the Nursing skills for best clinical practice”; the 52% declared “self confidence of practical skills and awareness as well as own limits for a good relief practice”. We also asked about things they would change in the program of the Course of Degree: over the 70% of the graduates proposed to increase the study-credits about pharmacology, while a 66% suggested to widen the amount of hours devoted to clinical practice. A meaningful number of them, regarding the proposals of change, asked for more support during the students internship. Over the 87% of the answering group state that the greatest opportunities that the Course of Degree has offered them, is to be employed in a very short time. The 52% identifies the acquisition of knowledge and competences for the clinical practice. Besides, the 41% affirm that the Course of Degree has helped them to develop an open mind approach to the world. The 36% points out opportunity for further professional advancement. On the other hand, for what concerns limits and frustration during the first period of working in a ward, the nurses refer the lack of time for nursing patients; no possibility of working at the side of an expert nurse for a suitable time; they declare that the great limit is the little number of nurses in the ward they work in.
