The Sassi di Roccamalatina are with no doubt one of the most relevant landforms of the entire Emilia-Romagna Apennines. They characterise the landscape of the mid-Panaro valley. These rock cliffs have been modeled from coarse to fine-grained, quartz-feldspar sandstones from the Oligocene-Miocene. The morphology of these cliffs is derived from selective erosion. Their shape is also due to the subvertical attitude of the strata which makes them more resistant to erosion and inhospitable for the vegetation. This area is of great environmental interest and is now part of a Regional Park.
