A nonlinear semivectorial beam propagation methodbased on the finite element method is presented. It applies tothree-dimensional optical waveguides and accounts for polarizationeffects. To show the usefulness of this approach numericalresults regarding both Ex (quasi-TE) and Ey (quasi-TM) wavesare presented for directional couplers with nonlinear cores. Thelimits of scalar formulations are highlighted especially whenworking near and above the coupler threshold power.
