In this paper the authors report the reactivity of 3 different zircon-based pigments in ceramic glaze studied by an optical microscopy.

The effects of temperature, melting time and glass composition on the chemical and physical properties of zircon pigments were investigated. The decomposition temperature of the zircon pigments was greatly affected by the glass composition. A composition with higher sodium content was more corrosive toward the zircon pigments as shown in the dissolution test performed. The dissolution rate of zircon pigments was controlled by its decomposition process.

Abstract

The effects of temperature, melting time and glass composition on the chemical and physical properties of zircon pigments were investigated. The decomposition temperature of the zircon pigments was greatly affected by the glass composition. A composition with higher sodium content was more corrosive toward the zircon pigments as shown in the dissolution test performed. The dissolution rate of zircon pigments was controlled by its decomposition process.
