Polycondensation reactions of 5,5 prime -methylene-bis-salicylaldehyde with aliphatic diamines yield polymeric aromatic Schiff bases which behave as strong complexing agents toward toxic metals. Similarly, thiobis-( beta -diketones) reacting with bivalent cations generate in situ polymeric metal complexes. Here the authors report on the synthesis and characterization of such polymeric complexes and the metal selectivity properties of both classes of polymers. A comparison between these two classes of compounds, with respect to their complexation ability, is also made.

Abstract

Polycondensation reactions of 5,5 prime -methylene-bis-salicylaldehyde with aliphatic diamines yield polymeric aromatic Schiff bases which behave as strong complexing agents toward toxic metals. Similarly, thiobis-( beta -diketones) reacting with bivalent cations generate in situ polymeric metal complexes. Here the authors report on the synthesis and characterization of such polymeric complexes and the metal selectivity properties of both classes of polymers. A comparison between these two classes of compounds, with respect to their complexation ability, is also made.
