Intermittent demand refers to time series characterized by frequent zero demand periods and high variance whenever a positive demand occurs. Such time series are common in spare parts management, start-up, and multi-echelon supply chain environments. The forecast of intermittent items requires specialized techniques to be carried out effectively, their results are inputs to inventory control methods used to manage the inventory levels. If many items require such a forecasting and inventory control procedure classification techniques are used to group similar items in homogenous classes, each class then applies the same forecasting and inventory control techniques in order to save both computational and organizational resources. This thesis proposes and tests a set of classification methods addressing this issue, alongside forecasting and inventory control methods to be used after the classification phase.
