The interview critically examines the concept of (political) sovereignty, following its steps in the history of ideas, and relating it to the main problems of the concrete juridical-political experience. The basic idea that emerges from the Colloquium is about the constitutive connection between sovereignty, constituent power and democracy. This connection, often underestimated in contemporary constitutionalism, imposes to re-evaluate politics – and especially, political sovereignty – as a prime instrument of mediation, as well as a possible remedy for the identity crisis that today seems to cross the European world.

Abstract

The interview critically examines the concept of (political) sovereignty, following its steps in the history of ideas, and relating it to the main problems of the concrete juridical-political experience. The basic idea that emerges from the Colloquium is about the constitutive connection between sovereignty, constituent power and democracy. This connection, often underestimated in contemporary constitutionalism, imposes to re-evaluate politics – and especially, political sovereignty – as a prime instrument of mediation, as well as a possible remedy for the identity crisis that today seems to cross the European world.
