Abstract

The complex history of Judicial Psychiatric Hospitals (OPG), considering the evident criticisms of these places dedicated to offenders not responsible for their mental conditions and socially dangerous, led to their gradual and definitive closure in 2015. At the same time, the legislator has agreed to replace them with “Residences for the Execution of Security Measures” (REMS), which are purely therapeutic structures, based on the principles of sanitation and territorialisation of the treatment. The present paper aims to observe the result of this winding and significant path of overcoming and transforming the specific security measure, officially concluded in 2017 spring, with the closure of the last OPG and the opening of new REMS among regional context.
