The First World War unleashed a lively and confused debate over the evolutionary mening of war, militarism, and their biological consequences. After considering Darwin himself, the paper discusses some aspects of "peace eugenics", as represented by G. Vacher de Lapouge, C. Richet, D.S. Jordan, V.L. Kellogg, G.F. Nicolai. They had different political views. The paper also points out some of the ambiguities inherent in their discourse.
